Wednesday evening May 15th the Gulf of Maine Post will present the film COYOTE The Mike Plant Story following a cocktail reception at the Frontier Theater in Brunswick, Maine. An optional dinner will follow at the restaurant.
From lake sailing in Minnesota to ocean sailing from Jamestown, RI, Mike came out of nowhere to win the BOC Challenge Class II - Open 50 in Arco Distributor in 1986/87. Bitten by the ocean sailing bug he went on to compete in the 1989 Vendee Globe in Duracell; though eliminated he still set the record as the fastest American to sail single-handed around the world in 135 days. Another BOC Challenge in 1990/91 saw him come in fourth, this his third solo circumnavigation. Always under-funded with a short-handed team Mike was enroute to the start of the 1992 Vendee Globe in his new Open 60 Coyote when his bulb keel separated from the fin and the boat turtled with the loss of Mike Plant. There are lots of ins-and-outs to Mike's life including a solo trek in South America, time in a Portuguese jail and escape from Greek authorities - all exposed in the documentary film.
